The Kama Sutra
The Kama Sutra was written in ancient India as a guide to living in the world. It describes a spiritual view of the stages in one's life in order to achieve wisdom, material well-being and bliss. The passages cover a wide array of daily matters and provide teachings on essential subjects. Sexual practices in the Kama Sutra are meant to teach and enlighten. These occupy a central section in the ancient writings. Each verse, or 'sutra' conveys a lesson; advice, knowledge or custom to men and women of that time. The Kama Sutra was written down, rather than transferred as an oral tradition, by the sage Vatsyama circa: 300AD, to pass the teachings to others far & wide. Many of the 'western' views have focused on the erotic nature of the writings, rather than encompass the work as a spiritual view of life in ancient India. Some dismiss the Kama Sutra as being pornographic and thus, immoral.Early translations done by Burton reflected the social context of Victorian England. Phrases, words and entire sections of the Kama Sutra were mistranslated. A very distorted understanding existed until more modern and accurate translations from the original Sanscrit had been completed. Sexual practices in the Kama Sutra are meant to teach and enlighten.
As a sacred experience, sex is a core part of achieving a balanced, happy & fulfilled life.
